My generous reader wrote this:
"Writing is an unusual activity in that it is possible to get it right. Most things in life, you get one shot; blow it and you're down. Writing, you have every opportunity to edit, and re-write, and re-edit, and re-re-write. You have to subject every word, every comma to the most withering attention you can bring to bear. Any word that isn't carrying its weight gets the chop."
I have to say that it is right on the money. I had not thought of it in that way, but so true. In what other art form, do you get to go back and keep making changes. Painters, I guess can to a certain point, but only to a certain point. It, at some point, becomes an issue of starting over or being happy with the canvas you have created. Sculptors, I think really only get one shot. You cannot put cut stone back, once you have chipped it off, there is no going back. I guess if you are molding clay, maybe you can fix a mistake.
So writing is a rather unique. You can change your mind, you can edit and re-edit. Word choice is crucial. The most subtle change in words and you have a different story. I like to play with point of view. Sometimes I write something in the first person and then go ahead and change it to the third. It changes the feeling of the story, but none the less it is a great exercise.
I also like to write poetry. This I have done one and off since I was young. I am getting back to it. It is very freeing, poetry. You are not stuck with all the grammar rules. You can really play with the language.
I also speak another language. (German) I cannot write it nearly as well as I can speak and read it. Writing in German has always been very hard for me. Which is so strange, because writing in English has always been something I enjoyed and was reasonable good at doing.
I have always liked words. Word choice is a big deal for me. I remeber in middle school, we had do do these weekly worksheets, looking up a list of "big" words in the dictionary and then use them in a sentence. I loved this assignment, frankly I think I am the only one who liked it. It was so much fun. I have been toying with doing that here. Picking a word and then writing a killer sentence with it.
So once again, thanks generous reader. You have given me much food for thought and that is what this blog is all about. Practice, feedback, practice, feedback. The only way my art will get better, is to keep working towards perfection, not sure I will ever get there, but that is the point. To make the journey, to try and use language to the very best of my ability to make a point, to entertain, to enrich others, to bring them pleasure.
In college I often heard that a person will have 5 to 7 "careers" before they retire. I never believed this. Well I am onto to number 3 (well technically 4 I guess if we are keeping a really strict count.) After college I worked briefly as a waitress, then I spent ten years working at a major financial services firm, then 2 years as being a full time mom and now I am working on being a professional writer. (I am still a mom - so that is point of indecision as to whether this is my 3rd or 4th exactly.)
So right now I am getting paid to write newsletter copy, website content, and some business documents from time to time. This is my efforts to actually make writing pay. That said, what I really want to do is write fiction.
My passion is fiction. So, that is mostly what this blog will be about. My quest at writing good fiction. I like all kinds of fiction. I love a good mystery. I like romantic suspense. I like a bit of the paranormal stuff, I am learning to like some chick-lit. I really like a well written and well plotted erotic romance.
So - that said I will try to keep you all posted on my progress. I currently have a short story in the works. (Two finished, but unpublished.) One short story in the works. Three novels plotted and one in the works. I also must report that I have my first rejection under my belt. It stung a bit. But it was my first stab at fiction and my first story written in a long time.
So now I can say I survived rejection and I am moving on! (Yeah me!)
I also like to write what I have termed mind candy - which I will treat you to a bit at a time...maybe later in the week.
I welcome comments, suggestions, questions - the whole deal.
